What is an oxidant (free radical)?
Oxidants are molecules that have lost an electron and seek to regain one at the expense of another molecule.
To stop this chain reaction, electron donors are needed: antioxidants. Dietary deficiencies in antioxidants are very common because our diet no longer provides enough of them.
Sources of oxidation
Our metabolism naturally generates free radicals: cellular respiration, toxin breakdown, hormones, protein glycation, etc.
Pollution: chemical, electromagnetic, UV, tobacco, alcohol, ultra-processed foods, excess sugar or exercise
Chronic infections and chronic inflammatory diseases
Consequences for the body
An excess of free radicals promotes aging and cellular degeneration, paving the way for numerous diseases:
- cancers
- neurodegenerative diseases
- cardiovascular diseases
- skin and vision disorders
- chronic inflammation
- decreased immunity
How to fight free radicals?
A diet rich in colorful fruits and vegetables, green tea, and spices provides antioxidants. Depending on age, lifestyle, or certain pathologies, supplementation can be beneficial.

Carotenoids Carotenoids represent a major group of antioxidants. They are fat-soluble pigments particularly present in colorful plants (yellow, orange, red, green). About forty have been identified in food. Vegetables, fruits, and algae each provide their specific carotenoids: The best known is beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A, which protects the skin, mucous membranes, vision, and immunity. It is present in many fruits and vegetables (carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, broccoli, apricots, melons...) Lycopene (present in tomatoes), which has a protective role for the skin, prostate, and cardiovascular system. Lutein, astaxanthin, and zeaxanthin, known for their preventive actions against ocular degeneration. Bixin (specific to annatto), a powerful skin protector against UV damage. |
