Vegetable oils come from oilseed plants (from the Latin oleago: containing oil), unlike essential oils which are derived from aromatic plants. Vegetable oils are widely used in cosmetics, where their nourishing, moisturizing, and protective properties work wonders. But some of them are also very useful in aromatherapy, either because they have specific therapeutic properties or because they make excellent bases for diluting essential oils.

The essentials of vegetable oils and macerated oils
A vegetable oil is a fatty substance extracted from an oilseed plant, meaning a plant containing seeds or fruits rich in fatty substances.
Macerated oils and vegetable butters are generally grouped into this family.
Vegetable oils and macerated oils are recognized by the medical profession for their specific virtues depending on their composition in fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins, and for their beneficial actions on health and beauty.
Obtaining process by cold pressing or maceration
- By cold pressing: This is the most natural process, guaranteeing the obtainment of the plant's active ingredients without denaturation.
- By maceration: Maceration consists of bringing a fatty substance into contact with a plant (or a part of a plant: leaves, seeds, flowers, root pieces...) for a certain period, with the aim of preserving it and extracting an active ingredient. This applies to plants for which cold pressing is impossible.
