Essential oil - Organic tea tree

PROBLEM & OILY SKIN     NATURAL DEFENSES     DISINFECTION

Tea tree, also known as tea tree, is an evergreen tree native to Australia. This shrub can reach a height of 6 meters, and its leaves contain a fairly high concentration of essential oil, around 2%.
The plant flowers in autumn, when the flowers are pollinated by bees. The fruit of the tea tree has many seeds, but it is the leaves that are distilled to obtain the essential oil.

  • INCI name: Melaleuca alternifolia leaf oil
  • Botanical name: Melaleuca alternifolia
  • Part of the plant extracted: Leaves
  • Extraction method: Steam distillation

Cultivation & Origin

Melaleuca alternifolia is part of the large Myrtaceae family, which is found mainly in Australia and tropical America.
This plant family contains nearly 3000 species classified under 150 genera, from which other essential oils are derived, such as niaouli essential oil or cajeput essential oil, for example.

The first traces of Melaleuca trees appeared in the 1770s. In 1855, the genus melaleuca alternifolia was identified by two botanists. The tea tree owes its other name "tea tree" probably to the explorer James Cook, when he made his round-the-world trip. In 1770, he reached the Australian coast: the ship's crew discovered the leaves of the tea tree and used them to make tea, hence its name!
An essential part of aromatherapy, tea tree essential oil has many benefits. Aboriginal tribes used the leaves of the tree to treat many ailments, especially all types of infections.
Nowadays, tea tree grows in other regions of the globe, in New Zealand, the United States or China.
It takes about 100 kg of tea tree leaves to obtain 1.5 litres of essential oil!

Health Properties

Fights infectious disorders :

  • Known for its powerful antiseptic and antibacterial properties, tea tree essential oil is primarily recommended to prevent and fight infections. Its high concentration of alpha terpineol, also found in niaouli essential oil or lavender essential oil, allows it to act effectively against viruses and microbes, especially those affecting the ENT sphere.
Used in diffusion or inhalation alone or with other essential oils such as eucalyptus, ravintsara or niaouli, organic tea tree essential oil is an essential oil to have in winter

Energizing and toning :

  • In case of fatigue or to promote recovery after an infection, organic tea tree essential oil helps regain energy and tone.
It also helps stimulate natural defenses and promotes a more positive state of mind with its fresh and invigorating scent!

Contributes to oral hygiene :

  • If you suffer from canker sores, small wounds, or sensitive gums, tea tree essential oil incorporated into toothpastes or oral care products can be a good ally to provide comfort and fight against bacterial proliferation. It also helps freshen breath and prevent tooth yellowing, especially with regular tea or coffee consumption.

Cosmetic Properties

Soothes certain skin disorders :

  • The antibacterial, antifungal, and antiseptic properties of tea tree essential oil are also very useful for caring for all skin types. The WHO itself has recognized the topical use of tea tree to prevent and soothe certain skin conditions such as acne or fungal infections!
It will also be recommended to calm the skin after a bite or insect sting, and to facilitate its regeneration in case of small wounds or minor burns.

Decongestant and anti-cellulite :

  • Stimulating and toning, organic tea tree essential oil added to your cosmetic products also helps combat the feeling of heavy legs and regain daily comfort.
A natural anti-cellulite active ingredient, it prevents the appearance of orange peel skin and stimulates lymphatic circulation. For this use, it can be used alone or in combination with other essential oils with circulatory properties such as Italian helichrysum essential oil, cineole rosemary essential oil, or cypress essential oil.

Cares for the scalp :

  • As an antifungal, organic tea tree essential oil doesn't just benefit the skin: it can also be used for hair care.
For dandruff, it deeply purifies the scalp when used as a hair oil bath, diluted in a vegetable oil. Combined with other vegetable oils and essential oils, it promotes hair growth and adds shine. A natural way to regain a healthy scalp!
