Cultivation & Origin

Although native to Western Asia, clary sage can also be found in Southern and Central Europe. It is cultivated for its medicinal properties, but it is also widely used around the world as an ornamental plant. Clary sage can be used as a condiment, particularly to flavor red meat dishes or in the preparation of accompanying sauces. It was also one of the key ingredients in England for making beer, as an alternative to hops. Nowadays, clary sage is found as an essential oil and a perfuming active ingredient.
