Cultivation & Origin
As its name suggests, mountain savory mainly grows in high-altitude areas. The leaves of the plant are harvested all year round and used as a condiment to flavor dishes and enhance them with their slightly peppery aroma.
Mountain savory was also formerly used in infusions for its positive effects on digestion and to soothe coughs. In Greek mythology, it was considered an aphrodisiac, where it was called "herb of happiness."
Mountain savory is also widely used in aromatherapy. To produce the essential oil, the flowering tops of the plant are used.
Health Properties
Fights the proliferation of viruses, parasites, and bacteria:
-
In aromatherapy, organic mountain savory essential oil is considered one of the most effective essential oils against viruses, bacteria, and parasites, similar to compact oregano essential oil, for example. Rich in monoterpenic phenols, mountain savory is therefore mainly recommended as support during intestinal, viral, or bacterial infections to help eliminate pathogens.
Helps stimulate natural defenses and restore respiratory comfort:
-
Also invigorating, mountain savory essential oil will be ideal to use during periods of infection and after recovery to help regain tone and energy. Its toning properties, due to its high concentration of phenols, will also be useful in helping to naturally stimulate natural defenses. In cases of ENT disorders, it will provide comfort, alone or in combination with other essential oils to strengthen or complement its different properties.
Reduces physical, mental, and sexual fatigue:
-
Organic mountain savory essential oil and its stimulating properties are also recommended in cases of physical, as well as mental or sexual, fatigue. It contains thymol and carvacrol, molecules that promote relaxation and well-being. It can therefore be recommended in cases of anxiety, seasonal depression, or intellectual or emotional fatigue.
Promotes joint well-being:
-
Diluted in a vegetable oil and applied with light massages to tense areas, mountain savory essential oil also has an analgesic action, useful for helping to regain comfort in cases of joint tension. For this use, it can be used alone, or in combination with other essential oils with similar properties, such as wintergreen, for example, for a more powerful synergy and more pronounced effects.
Cosmetic Properties
Acts as support against skin infections:
-
In cosmetics, mountain savory essential oil is quite rarely used. However, it can be used to help fight against skin infections such as mycosis or abscesses, due to its powerful antibacterial and antifungal properties.
Dermocaustic, it should always be well diluted in a vegetable oil before applying it to the skin, and always on small areas.
As mentioned above, organic mountain savory essential oil can also be used in massage on tense areas of the body to soothe any muscular or joint inflammation.
Purifies combination to oily skin and fights imperfections:
-
Added in very small doses to homemade cosmetic care recipes, organic mountain savory essential oil can also be recommended for combination to oily skin. Indeed, its antibacterial and antifungal properties make it a very effective natural ingredient to help fight against the appearance of imperfections and to help rebalance sebum production.
Usage Tips
An essential oil in aromatherapy, mountain savory essential oil is primarily renowned for its antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral benefits. Very powerful, it is thus recommended as support to help fight against all types of infections. It is mainly used in massage, diluted in a vegetable oil, on the target areas. In diffusion, it should be combined with other less powerful essential oils, especially to take advantage of its stimulating and invigorating properties.
For well-being, mountain savory essential oil is recommended to help combat physical, mental, intellectual, and sexual fatigue. Slightly sedative, it also helps to relieve stress, anxiety, and nervousness.
Finally, its antibacterial and antifungal properties will be useful in cosmetics to purify combination to oily skin and eliminate skin infections such as mycosis. It is generally used in small doses in cosmetic care recipes, or applied very locally diluted in a vegetable oil.
Organic mountain savory essential oil can be used alone or combined with other essential oils to enhance or complement its benefits. For a more powerful synergy against viruses and bacteria, it can be mixed with essential oils of thyme thymol, Chinese cinnamon, compact oregano, or noble laurel.
