Nutmeg comes from the nutmeg tree, botanically known as Myristica fragrans. It is a tree belonging to the Myristicaceae family. The plant typically grows to about twelve meters tall, but can reach up to 20 meters.
Its leaves are evergreen and aromatic, with an elongated shape.
The nutmeg tree is a dioecious tree: male and female flowers are borne on separate plants. A fleshy fruit appears on the female plant. It is about the size of an apricot and splits in two when ripe. A brown seed surrounded by a network of bright red arils, called mace, can then be seen. The nutmeg itself is found inside the seed's kernel.
- INCI Name: Myristica fragrans kernel oil

Cultivation & Origin
Originating from the Moluccas archipelago in Indonesia, the nutmeg tree is mainly cultivated for the aroma of its nut and mace. These are indeed highly prized in cooking, perfumery, and in the production of organic nutmeg essential oil.
The use of nutmeg dates back to ancient Egypt, where it was used for embalming mummies, but its precise use remains vague.
In 1511, the Portuguese were the first to reach the Moluccas archipelago. They thus monopolized the nutmeg market throughout Europe for nearly two centuries, before being joined by the Dutch. In 1863, nutmeg cultivation became free. It is now found in almost all tropical regions. The leading producer of nutmeg is Grenada, an island in the Caribbean. Nutmeg is currently used in many sectors: perfume production, essential oil manufacturing, culinary preparations, etc.
