CIRCULATION & SLIMMING

Niaouli is a medium-sized tree (4 to 12 m) that can exceptionally reach 25 m in height. It is recognizable by its twisted, rarely straight silhouette. Its trunk is covered with a whitish, thick, spongy bark laminated in many layers that detach in large strips.

Like most species of the genus Melaleuca, niaouli has evergreen, fragrant leaves.

Its white flowers resemble spikes and measure between 4 to 8 cm in length and 3 cm in width. Each flower has 5 free sepals, 5 petals and numerous stamens.
Depending on climatic conditions, flowering and fruiting can spread throughout the year, as is the case in New Caledonia.

  • INCI Name: Melaleuca viridiflora leaf oil
  • Botanical Name: Melaleuca viridiflora solander
  • Part of the plant extracted: Twigs leaves
  • Extraction process: Steam distillation

Cultivation & Origin

Native to Australia, as well as the islands of Madagascar and New Caledonia, niaouli is a fast-growing and highly proliferating tree. Indeed, it can grow 1 to 2 meters per year, and can produce seeds 5 times a year. This is why it is considered an invasive species, particularly in Florida where it proliferates abundantly.

The Kanak tribes of New Caledonia had long known its medicinal virtues and used it as a building material.

In Europe, Niaouli appeared in the 19th century and was notably used later, during the 1st and 2nd World Wars.
