Essential oil - Cistus organic

 MATURE SKIN     NATURAL DEFENSES

Cistus ladanifer, also known as gum cistus, is a shrub found mainly around the Mediterranean region, particularly in Corsica.

Its evergreen foliage contains beautiful green and white leaves, covered with resin that has a fresh and powerful scent. The cistus flowers are characterized by their size, which can reach up to 10 cm in diameter, and their white and red color.

Among all the cistus species (there are nearly 300!), Cistus ladanifer is the only one used in aromatherapy and for the elaboration of perfumes.

Cistus ladanifer has the particularity of resisting fires, which makes it a privileged tree to contribute to the reforestation of burnt areas.

  • INCI Name: Cistus ladaniferus leaf/stem oil
  • Botanical Name: Cistus ladaniferus L.
  • Plant part extracted: Branches
  • Extraction process: Steam distillation

Culture & Origin

The properties of cistus have been exploited since antiquity. Egyptians harvested its resin for various uses, particularly for fumigation and for its astringent and antiseptic properties.

Cistus ladanifer also has a religious symbolism. In the Bible, it represents a sacred essence, alongside other plants such as cedar or benzoin, for example.

Today, the main country where Cistus ladanifer is cultivated is Spain.

It can also be diluted in a vegetable oil, then applied as a massage on the solar plexus alone or in combination with other essential oils with complementary properties.
