STRESS & FATIGUE     NATURAL DEFENSES     CIRCULATION & SLIMMING

A species of tree from the Pinaceae family, the Atlas cedar gets its name from its location in the mountain range of the same name, found in North Africa.

An ornamental tree, it grows mainly near mountainous areas between 1000 and 2500 meters in altitude, as well as in Morocco and Algeria.

  • INCI Name: Cedrus atlantica wood oil
  • Botanical name: Cedrus atlantica
  • Part of the plant extracted: Wood
  • Extraction method: Steam distillation

Cultivation & Origin

The Atlas cedar was first introduced to France in the 1830s.

Majestic and imposing, it is mainly used as an ornamental tree in luxurious parks and gardens. Today, the Atlas cedar is considered threatened due to climate change and deforestation.

The wood of the Atlas cedar is used to make frameworks. Its highly aromatic essential oil was traditionally used by the Egyptians for embalming mummies. Nowadays, it is mainly used in cosmetics to purify the skin and contribute to body drainage.

Health Properties

Helps to restore well-being and serenity:

  • Like a walk in the forest, Atlas cedar essential oil, like Scots pine essential oil for example, has a fresh and woody scent that invites escape.

Diffused for a few minutes in the ambient air, it contributes to relaxation and naturally reduces stress and anxiety. It can be used alone, or in combination with other oils to enhance its calming benefits, such as lavender or sweet orange essential oil, for example.

Promotes respiratory comfort:

  • In case of nasal congestion or cough, organic Atlas cedar essential oil will help to restore respiratory comfort thanks to its fresh scent.

Being also antispasmodic and purifying, it will help to limit coughing fits through inhalation or diffusion and to fight against the proliferation of viruses and bacteria.

It will also be used to help stimulate natural defenses, especially during the winter period.

Purifies ambient air and eliminates bad odors:

  • The optimizing and fresh scent of Atlas cedar essential oil makes it a recommended oil in aromatherapy to deodorize the air and eliminate bad odors. Fresh and purifying, it brings a breath of fresh air into the house and can also be incorporated into homemade recipes, especially cleaning products.

Cosmetic Properties

Helps to reduce skin problems:

  • The purifying properties of organic Atlas cedar essential oil are also useful in cosmetics to care for combination to oily skin in particular.

It can thus be used as a natural active ingredient in treatments such as face masks, toning lotions, or moisturizing creams to help balance sebum production and fight against the appearance of imperfections.

Facilitates body drainage:

  • In body care, Atlas cedar essential oil is one of the most effective essential oils to help fight against the formation of cellulite.

It is also recommended for relieving discomfort in cases of circulatory or lymphatic disorders. Rather well tolerated by the skin, Atlas cedar essential oil can be applied to the affected areas with circular massages, diluted in a vegetable oil alone or in combination with other draining and decongestant essential oils. Note that this oil also promotes skin regeneration and healing, useful against stretch marks in particular!

Stimulates hair growth and slows down hair loss:

  • The stimulating properties of organic Atlas cedar essential oil make it an ideal hair ally for naturally fighting hair loss.

Applied as an oil bath to the scalp, it will help stimulate blood circulation and revitalize dull and weakened hair.

Purifying, it will help to restore comfort in case of itching and will help to reduce dandruff.

Usage Tips

Fresh and uplifting, organic Atlas cedar essential oil will mainly be recommended for diffusion as well as for topical use, previously diluted in a vegetable oil.

Diffused in the ambient air or inhaled from a tissue, it will help restore calm and serenity while promoting respiratory well-being.

Its antispasmodic and stimulating properties also contribute to stimulating natural defenses and toning the body.

In cosmetics, it is renowned for its draining and circulatory virtues, particularly interesting for helping to fight against cellulite and the feeling of heavy legs. In facial care, it purifies combination to oily skin and limits the formation of imperfections and acne pimples.

Its slightly woody and fresh scent makes it a pleasant essential oil to incorporate into homemade recipes, especially household products or cosmetic recipes for men. It will also work wonders on weakened scalps prone to dandruff or oily roots.
