Cade, also known as Juniperus oxycedrus or Wild Juniper, is a small tree that grows primarily around the Mediterranean region, in maquis and garrigue shrublands. It has evergreen needle-like foliage and reddish bark.

Juniper berries are valued for their diuretic properties, which help combat water retention. They are also used to make certain alcoholic beverages like gin! For the production of cade essential oil, the branches are used. The wood is also widely used, especially as a natural repellent.

Cultivation & Origin

Cade oil (which is different from essential oil) was traditionally used for its antiseptic, disinfectant, and healing properties, particularly on the skin in the form of salves and ointments.

Later, cade was used in veterinary medicine to treat horses' hooves and to combat mange. Its repellent properties have also been useful and still are for keeping away unwanted insects like moths or rodents. Cade is also a very good natural incense: reduced to powder, it helps eliminate bad odors in the house and purify the ambient air.
