Native to the Mediterranean region (France, Morocco, Spain), compact Oregano differs from garden marjoram, which originates from Asia. Its name comes from the Greek "Oros" meaning "mountain" and "Ganos" meaning "joy". Oregano, sometimes called "mountain ornament," lays a thin green cover on the dry slopes of mountainous hillsides.
Organic Oregano essential oil, also called "wild marjoram," is extracted by steam distillation of the flowering tops of Origanum compactum. Its scent is reminiscent of thyme and fresh grass.
