Originally from Bosnia, the bay laurel was used to crown ancient Greek victors. Sometimes perched on Apollo's head, then on Caesar's, it was also inseparable from Asclepius, the son of the god of medicine. Even today, this perennial shrub with evergreen foliage crowns our modern heroes, as it is the very root of the word "baccalaureate" (bacca lauri means laurel berries).
