Essential oil - Organic peppermint

ACNE & OILY SKIN     TONICITY & BALANCE     EVERYDAY AILMENTS

Also known as “Peppermint,” peppermint is part of the Lamiaceae family. Created from the combination of watermint and spearmint, peppermint was cultivated in England starting in the 17th century.
Mint has semi-evergreen and very aromatic green foliage, making it essential for the preparation of culinary dishes or traditional drinks like mint tea.
A medicinal plant, peppermint grows in summer, from July to October. Its characteristic oval-shaped leaves have small "hairs" and give off a strong odor, especially when crushed.
Peppermint can be consumed as an infusion, or as an essential oil to enjoy its many health and skin benefits.

  • INCI Name: Mentha piperita oil
  • Botanical name: Mentha piperita
  • Part of the plant extracted: Aerial parts
  • Obtention process: Steam distillation

Culture & Origin

Peppermint was identified as a distinct species of mint in the 1750s. To date, there are nearly 10! Different types of mints were already used in ancient times for their antiseptic benefits and their aromatic power. Peppermint was then cultivated in the United States, then in France where it grows mainly in Essonne, Drôme, and Maine-et-Loire, as well as in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, particularly for its distillation.
Peppermint is widely used around the world to make liqueurs, drinks, toothpastes, and confectionery. To date, India, Italy, Argentina, and Australia are the main producing countries of peppermint essential oil. It is obtained by distilling the leaves: it takes approximately 100 kg of leaves to produce 1 kg of essential oil!

Health Benefits

Helps relieve headaches and migraines :

  • Rich in menthol, peppermint essential oil is a natural ally of choice to help relieve headaches and migraines.
For this use, it is recommended to apply a drop to each temple diluted in a little vegetable oil, and to massage the area for a few seconds to quickly regain a feeling of well-being and reduce tension.

Facilitates digestion :

  • Peppermint essential oil has spasmolytic and carminative properties, which help facilitate digestion and restore comfort in cases of mild digestive disorders such as bloating or a feeling of heaviness. It is also interesting to use it to combat motion sickness, and to soothe dizziness and nausea.
Organic peppermint essential oil will also be recommended to help detoxify the body, in combination with other oils such as lemon, for example.

Fights ENT disorders :

  • In case of respiratory problems or congestion, organic peppermint essential oil will help to regain comfort and to fight against the proliferation of viruses and bacteria alone, or in combination with other essential oils such as eucalyptus or ravintsara. Its powerful fresh and invigorating scent will also provide a boost if you feel nervous or physical fatigue.

Cosmetic Properties

Soothes pain and itching :

  • Anti-inflammatory and anesthetic, the menthol contained in peppermint essential oil helps to naturally soothe tension and pain after a shock, a sports session or a blow. Its powerful refreshing effect is notably used in the formulation of anti-pain massage creams and gels. It also helps to combat itching of the skin and scalp.

Stimulates blood circulation :

  • In cosmetic use, organic peppermint essential oil can also be recommended to regain comfort in cases of heavy legs.
As with edema after a shock, peppermint essential oil helps to limit inflammation and naturally decongest sensitive areas. It also contains sesquiterpenes, molecules that activate blood circulation. It can be used alone, massaged into the calves pre-diluted in a vegetable oil, or in combination with other essential oils with circulatory properties and decongestants such as cypress or juniper oils.

Purifies combination and blemish-prone skin :

  • For skin, peppermint essential oil will be particularly recommended for the care of combination, oily, and blemish-prone skin. Its regulatory and anti-inflammatory properties promote skin healing and prevent the appearance of imperfections. It can also be incorporated into homemade deodorant recipes in combination with other essential oils such as palmarosa to help combat excessive perspiration.

Stimulates hair growth :

  • Applied to the scalp as an oil bath, peppermint essential oil stimulates hair growth and restores vigor to devitalized hair. It also helps to combat dandruff, and allows you to regain comfort in case of itching. We recommend using it in combination with other essential oils to benefit from complementary properties and offer deep care to your hair.
Highly aromatic, organic peppermint essential oil can also be used to fragrance your hair care products or your plant-based hair dyes. §

Usage Tips

Expectorant, decongestant, antibacterial, and antifungal, it can be used in multiple ways to soothe everyday ailments. It is mainly recommended for calming pain, headaches, and naturally regaining vitality thanks to its fresh scent.
In cosmetics, it will be very useful for both skin and hair, pre-diluted in a vegetable oil and sparingly, as it is very powerful. Peppermint essential oil can be combined with lemon, cinnamon, or black spruce oils to combat fatigue. To complement its digestive virtues, it pairs very well with grapefruit or rosemary verbenone essential oils. It will also be highly popular for fragrancing many homemade recipes.
