PROBLEM & OILY SKIN     DAILY ACHES     TONE & BALANCE

 DIGESTION       RESPIRATORY COMFORT

Field mint, botanically known as Mentha arvensis, is one of the many mint species found worldwide. A plant of the Lamiaceae family, it is native to Europe. Similar to Mentha canadensis, field mint produces an essential oil rich in linalool. This perennial herbaceous plant can reach a height of 60 cm. Its leaves release a fresh, sweet, and slightly spicy fragrance. Field mint flowers from July to October.

Field mint should be distinguished from peppermint, even though their characteristics and properties are quite similar.

  • INCI name: Mentha arvensis flower/leaf/stem oil
  • Botanical name: Mentha arvensis L.
  • Part of the plant extracted: Flowering tops
  • Extraction process: Steam distillation

Culture & Origin

Field mint is primarily found in Northern and Eastern Europe. It is a very common species in France, although it is less prevalent in the South of the country. It can also be found in Turkey, Russia, and Central and Tropical Asia.

Mint is one of the most widely used plants in phytotherapy due to its numerous medicinal properties. Field mint was particularly used in Greco-Roman antiquity for its benefits on the digestive system, which are still widely recognized today. The leaves of field mint also have a definite culinary interest. They are used to enhance savory or sweet dishes, meats, or even soups, particularly in Poland or Bosnia.

Organic field mint essential oil is obtained by distilling the flowering tops of the plant.

Health Properties

Promotes digestive comfort:

  • Like peppermint essential oil, organic field mint essential oil will be primarily recommended to help restore digestive comfort. Indeed, it will be particularly effective in cases of slow or difficult digestion, with or without nausea or other digestive disorders. It is also used to help alleviate motion sickness and to contribute to the normal functioning of the liver thanks to the terpene alcohols and terpenes it contains.

Helps restore respiratory comfort:

  • Mint is mainly appreciated for its fragrance and its refreshing and invigorating flavor. When diffused, it helps promote respiratory comfort in cases of nasal congestion, for example. Here, it can be combined with other essential oils such as eucalyptus radiata for a more effective synergy, and to also strengthen its anti-infectious properties, useful for fighting viruses and bacteria.

Soothes joint tension and headaches:

  • Organic field mint essential oil, like all other types of mint, has soothing properties, as well as a powerful analgesic action thanks to its high concentration of menthol and menthyl acetate. It can therefore be recommended for massage on tense areas, diluted beforehand in a vegetable oil, combined or not with other essential oils with similar properties such as wintergreen or laurel essential oils, for example. Less powerful than peppermint essential oil, field mint can also be recommended to help relieve headaches and migraines.

Tones the body and aids nervous well-being:

  • In cases of physical or nervous fatigue, lack of enthusiasm, or lack of self-confidence, field mint essential oil, diffused for a few minutes in the air, helps promote action and contribute to psychological well-being. Its fresh scent also helps purify rooms in the house, alone or in combination with other essential oils such as Scots pine or lemon, for example.

Cosmetic Properties

Soothes skin itching:

  • Antipruritic, field mint essential oil can be used cosmetically to help soothe itching. It is thus recommended for minor burns, eczema, herpes, or as support during urticaria flare-ups. For this use, it is applied to the skin, diluted beforehand in a vegetable oil. It can be combined with other essential oils with complementary or similar properties, such as true lavender essential oil, for a more powerful synergy.

Tones the skin and purifies combination to oily skin:

  • Incorporated into homemade cosmetic care recipes, organic field mint essential oil can also be recommended to help purify combination to oily skin, contribute to regulating sebum production, or even promote the radiance of dull or tired skin. It is often used in treatments for acne or to eliminate blackheads.

Usage Tips

Less known than peppermint essential oil, organic field mint essential oil is milder and full of benefits for the body as well as for the skin. It is mainly used for atmospheric diffusion to aid respiratory comfort and to naturally refresh the atmosphere.

Tonic and stimulating, it is also used to promote digestive and hepatic comfort. On the skin, it helps soothe itching, alone or in combination with other essential oils. It can also help purify combination to oily skin. Finally, its analgesic action makes it an interesting essential oil to use to provide joint comfort, as well as to relieve headaches.

Organic field mint essential oil can be used alone, or in combination with other essential oils to enhance or complement its various virtues. For example, lavender essential oil can be used to soothe skin itching, lemon essential oil to enhance its digestive benefits, or palmarosa or tea tree essential oil to more effectively purify the skin and prevent the appearance of imperfections.
