Essential oil - Organic spike lavender

STRESS & FATIGUE     PROBLEM & OILY SKIN     EVERYDAY AILMENTS

 RESPIRATORY COMFORT

Spike lavender, or lavandula latifolia, is an aromatic shrub that grows in many European countries, particularly France, Spain, and England. It belongs to the Lamiaceae family and thrives in a warm, sunny, and dry Mediterranean climate, where it can develop optimally.

The plant forms a bush of approximately 80 cm in height. Its leaves are oval and measure up to 10 cm in length. The flowers are blue or purple and release a camphor-like scent.

  • INCI Name: Lavandula latifolia herb oil
  • Botanical Name: Lavandula latifolia
  • Part of the plant extracted: Flowering tops
  • Extraction method: Steam distillation

Cultivation & Origin

Easy to grow, spike lavender is not demanding when it comes to soil type: poor but well-drained soil is sufficient for it to develop properly. It grows equally well in acidic or basic soil and tolerates cold and drought quite well.
Mainly known for its calming benefits, spike lavender essential oil owes its name to the snake whose bite it helped to soothe: the asp viper.
Hildegard of Bingen was the first to clearly differentiate true lavender from spike lavender. As early as the 13th century, its decongestant and soothing properties against headaches (migraine) or to promote sleep were mentioned.

Health Properties

Promotes respiratory comfort :

  • Antiviral, anticatarrhal, and expectorant, spike lavender essential oil is primarily recommended to restore comfort in cases of respiratory and ENT infections. It can thus be recommended in winter to help restore well-being and naturally decongest the respiratory tract, by diffusion or by inhalation on a handkerchief. It can also be used preventively, to support natural defenses in combination with other essential oils such as niaouli or ravintsara, for example.

Soothes the nervous system :

  • Like all lavender essential oils, organic spike lavender essential oil also acts on the nervous system. Its richness in monoterpene alcohols coupled with its floral and pleasant scent makes it an interesting essential oil to use in diffusion or inhalation to naturally combat stress and nervousness, although true lavender essential oil is more recommended for this use.

Cosmetic Properties

Facilitates skin regeneration and healing :

  • Organic spike lavender essential oil is very well known for its regenerating properties on the skin. It is often indicated for burns or sunburns due to the presence of camphor, which stimulates microcirculation. It also works very well on skin wounds and will therefore be recommended for cuts, bedsores, mycoses, or psoriasis. It is an excellent natural ally to encourage healing, particularly for dry to very dry skin or acne-prone skin.

Calms insect bites and stings :

  • Spike lavender essential oil has the ability to instantly soothe insect bites and stings of all types (wasps, spiders, jellyfish, sea urchins, mosquitoes, bees...). In addition to being a powerful analgesic, the plant has antitoxic, antivenom, and anti-infectious effects. It is therefore an essential essential oil in aromatherapy, to take with you in your suitcase for your summer holidays or abroad! While this essential oil is very effective for quickly regaining comfort, it certainly does not exempt you from seeking prompt medical advice in the event of a significant bite, extensive redness, or swelling.

Usage Tips

Organic spike lavender essential oil has many benefits, both for health and skin. It is mainly recommended for sunburn or minor burns, as well as to help naturally soothe insect bites and itching. This essential oil can also be used for respiratory or ENT infections, as a complementary treatment, and for bronchial congestion to regain respiratory well-being.
Note that the active ingredients present in this oil have a very powerful relaxing and soothing effect, useful for stress, nervousness, or to promote restorative sleep.
To benefit from its many properties, organic spike lavender essential oil is mainly used in diffusion, inhalation, or topical application diluted beforehand in a vegetable oil.

You can also use this oil to repel mosquitoes and enjoy beautiful summer evenings outdoors, in combination with citronella essential oil, for example.

Spike lavender essential oil can be used alone or in synergy with other essential oils. To relieve bites and stings, it can be combined with litsea cubeba, bourbon geranium, or lemon eucalyptus.
