Also known as common cypress, evergreen cypress, or Provence cypress, cupressus sempervirens is native to Asia but is found mainly around the Mediterranean region. It can also be found on the island of Madagascar and in other countries in the southern hemisphere. The tree can grow up to 30 meters high, resists winter frosts and average drought.

  • INCI Name: Cupressus sempervirens Oil
  • Botanical name: Cupressus sempervirens
  • Part of the plant extracted: Twigs
  • Method of obtaining: Steam distillation

Cultivation & Origin

Cypress, like all other trees of the same family, is mainly used for its wood. It is found in the Bible, where it was said to have been used for the construction of the famous Noah's Ark. Cypress wood was also widely used by the Greeks and Romans for making many everyday items. Cypress also has a religious symbolism: this is why it is still found today in cemeteries in the South of France as an ornamental tree.

Cypress wood is also appreciated by cabinetmakers for its resistance and its ability to protect itself from humidity.

Organic cypress essential oil is obtained by distilling the branches of the tree. It takes about 1kg of plant to produce about 10ml of essential oil!

Health Properties

Promotes feminine well-being:

  • Cypress essential oil is a very interesting oil to use for women, to support them throughout their menstrual cycle and major life stages. It is particularly recommended to help alleviate symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes.
It will also be a good ally to contribute to well-being in case of spasms or abdominal pain, especially during painful periods. To benefit from its calming properties, it is recommended to dilute cypress essential oil in a vegetable oil, before applying it by massage to the lower abdomen and lower back according to the dosage.

Helps regain vitality:

  • Invigorating and fresh, organic cypress essential oil has a woody scent that promotes vitality and tone when diffused in the air or inhaled.
It is thus recommended in cases of emotional fatigue, a "slump", or for people prone to anxiety and nervousness.
Combined with other essential oils with similar or complementary properties such as ravintsara or Scots pine, it will facilitate emotional balance and help to regain motivation.

Fights coughs:

  • With its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action, cypress essential oil is also known for its positive benefits against coughs, especially persistent coughs related to infections such as bronchitis or sinusitis.
In combination with other natural active ingredients or as support for a treatment, it will allow you to regain respiratory comfort. For this use, it can be applied cutaneously diluted in a vegetable oil on the chest and upper back, or incorporated into a homemade cough syrup recipe.

Cosmetic Properties

Helps stimulate blood circulation:

  • In cosmetics, cypress essential oil is renowned for its circulatory benefits, particularly for helping to combat the sensation of heavy legs or the formation of cellulite.
To safely benefit from its decongestant properties, it is preferably used in massage, diluted in a vegetable oil, alone or in combination with other essential oils with similar properties such as lemon, Italian everlasting or peppermint oils. It will be useful in case of heavy leg sensation to help reduce swelling, but also against varicose veins or simply to regain daily comfort or after a plane trip, for example.

Reduces excessive perspiration:

  • Diluted in a vegetable oil or incorporated into homemade deodorant recipes, organic cypress essential oil helps to naturally combat excessive perspiration. It can be used alone, or in combination with other oils such as palmarosa or clary sage to boost its virtues and benefit from a more floral scent.
It is also recommended to combat hot flashes during menopause to benefit from its action on the hormonal system.

Usage Tips

Invigorating, purifying and optimising, organic cypress essential oil will be mainly used in olfaction, diffusion and topical application.
Its woody and fresh scent makes it a very interesting oil to diffuse in the ambient air to counter mental fatigue, to soothe the mind and to help naturally combat coughs.

It is also an essential oil recommended for women, both to promote daily well-being and for its cosmetic properties, as it helps to decongest tissues and combat heavy legs or cellulite.
