Coriander is a well-known aromatic herb used as a condiment to spice up dishes. A plant species from the Apiaceae family, it is cultivated in temperate zones and is a typical ingredient in many Asian and South American dishes. It is also widely found in Mediterranean dishes, such as tagines.

It is mainly the leaves that are used for their characteristic flavour. The plant also has seeds, which are used once ground as a spice in Asian curries.

  • INCI Name: Coriandrum Sativum Seed Oil
  • Botanical Name: Coriandrum sativum
  • Plant Part Extracted: Seeds
  • Extraction Process: Steam Distillation

Cultivation & Origin

Originally from Asia, coriander is one of the most cultivated aromatic herbs in the world.

Traces of coriander have been found on papyri dating back to 1550 BC, where its medicinal properties were already highlighted. Coriander was used by the Egyptians and in ancient Greece as a religious offering, as well as by the Romans for food preservation.

Coriander essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the plant's seeds. It is used for its medicinal properties, but also in perfumery. It should be noted that coriander fruits are listed in the French and European pharmacopoeia, a testament to their effectiveness against many daily ailments, especially digestive ones.

Health Benefits

Promotes digestion:

  • Organic coriander essential oil is mainly used for its positive effects on the digestive system. Its high concentration of limonene helps promote intestinal movements and thus facilitate digestion. It also stimulates bile production by the liver and the elimination of gas, making it an interesting ally to help fight transit problems. It helps boost the body's detoxification capabilities and restore comfort in cases of bloating or spasms, for example.

Aids respiratory comfort:

  • The active molecules contained in organic coriander essential oil are also useful for helping to regain well-being in cases of ENT disorders.
Used in diffusion or olfaction, it will help to decongest the respiratory tract and fight against the proliferation of viruses and bacteria. Coriander essential oil can also be applied to the skin, especially the back or solar plexus, diluted in a vegetable oil beforehand to avoid any risk of skin irritation.

Soothes psychological tension:

  • The antispasmodic properties of organic coriander essential oil are beneficial for well-being. Diffused into the air or inhaled, it naturally helps to soothe the mind, calm nervous spasms, and promote relaxation.
It can be used alone, or in combination with other essential oils with similar properties to enhance its benefits.

Relieves body tension:

  • In cases of joint or muscle tension (aches, rheumatism or various tensions), organic coriander essential oil will help to promote mobility thanks to its richness in linalool and alpha-pinene.
For this use, it is recommended to dilute it in a vegetable oil, before applying it as a massage to the affected areas in combination with other essential oils with similar properties such as peppermint essential oil, for example.

Cosmetic Properties

Stimulates skin regeneration:

  • Rich in antioxidants, particularly vitamin C, organic coriander essential oil helps the skin regenerate more effectively and better protect itself from external aggressions. Vitamin C also limits the formation of free radicals responsible for the appearance of signs of skin aging, making it a good natural active ingredient to add to cosmetic products for mature skin.

Helps reduce inflammation:

  • In cases of skin inflammation caused by skin disorders such as psoriasis or eczema, organic coriander essential oil applied to the skin will help restore comfort and limit any redness and itching.

Coriander essential oil can thus be directly integrated into cosmetic products such as nourishing creams, face masks or even hair care products to soothe irritated scalps.

Purifies combination to oily skin:

  • While organic coriander essential oil is useful for mature and irritated skin, it will also be a good ally for helping to purify combination to oily skin! Its antibacterial, detoxifying, and antifungal properties will indeed help fight against the appearance of imperfections and regulate excess sebum without harming the skin. For this use, we advise you to dilute it well in a non-comedogenic vegetable oil before applying it to the skin, alone or in combination with other essential oils such as tea tree essential oil, for example.

Usage Tips

Known for its digestive benefits, organic coriander essential oil not only pleasantly flavours dishes but also has multiple properties to care for our body and skin!
Antioxidant, purifying, and anti-inflammatory, it contributes to the beauty of all skin types and helps fight the signs of skin aging. Its euphoric and comforting scent will also be useful in diffusion or olfaction to help fight anxiety and create a soothing atmosphere, conducive to sleep and mood balance.

Organic coriander essential oil can be used alone, or in combination with other essential oils such as cinnamon or tea tree to enhance or complement its various virtues.
