The white grapefruit, also called pomelo or Citrus paradisi, is a cross between the citrus maxima and citrus sinensis varieties. Presented as a shrub, the white grapefruit can reach a height of 6 meters when planted in the ground. Its evergreen foliage consists of beautiful shiny green leaves, as well as white flowers that diffuse their sweet fragrance throughout the spring. The fruits of citrus paradisi ripen during the winter, and can reach up to 15 cm in diameter. Its juicy flesh is more or less sweet depending on the variety.
- INCI name: Citrus paradisi peel oil
- Botanical name: Citrus x paradisi
- Part of the plant extracted: Fresh zest
- Extraction process: Cold pressing
Cultivation & Origin
The citrus paradisi is native to Barbados, where an English captain introduced this variety in the 1700s.
From the 1750s, the cultivation of pomelo spread to the Caribbean islands as well as the Bahamas and later to Florida, to be widely commercialized from the 1940s-1950s mainly in the United States. White grapefruit is mainly exploited for its fruit, but also for its essence in perfumery. Organic grapefruit essential oil is obtained by cold pressing the fresh zests of the plant. It is estimated that approximately 250 kg of zests are needed to obtain 1 kg of essential oil.
Health Properties
Boosts tone and vitality :
-
Organic white grapefruit essential oil is one of the most pleasant essential oils to use in atmospheric diffusion. Fresh, fruity and invigorating, it is ideal for restoring energy in cases of fatigue, loss of motivation or simply for freshening and purifying rooms in the house. For this use, it can be combined with other essential oils such as Scots pine or lemon to enhance its antiseptic properties.
Promotes body detoxification and digestion :
-
Like many other citrus essential oils, white grapefruit essential oil has positive benefits on the digestive system. It also helps to promote liver detoxification as well as kidneys, and allows you to regain a feeling of lightness after a heavy meal.
It can also be used to stimulate appetite.
Helps to be positive and relax :
-
While organic grapefruit essential oil can stimulate the body, it can also be a good ally for regaining optimism and for promoting relaxation in cases of stress, nervousness or anxiety.
For this purpose, it can be diffused in the air, applied to the inner wrists or on the solar plexus, diluted beforehand in a vegetable oil. It can be combined with lavender or petitgrain bigarade essential oils for a more pronounced relaxing synergy and to promote restful sleep.
Contributes to muscular well-being :
-
In massage on tense areas of the body, organic grapefruit essential oil also contributes to muscular comfort. It can therefore be recommended in cases of cramps or aches, especially after a sports session. For this use, it can be used alone, but a synergy with other essential oils can boost its effects. For example, you can combine it with peppermint essential oil for its refreshing effect and powerful analgesic action.
Cosmetic Properties
Fights water retention and prevents cellulite :
-
The draining and decongestant properties of organic grapefruit essential oil will be useful in cosmetics, especially for making slimming products.
Like lemon essential oil, this oil helps to decongest tissues, promote the elimination of water stored in the body and to limit fat storage. Here again, it can be combined with other oils with similar properties such as sea fennel or cypress for more pronounced effects.
Purifies combination, oily and blemish-prone skin :
-
In facial care, organic white grapefruit essential oil proves to be a good ally for purifying combination, oily and blemish-prone skin. It indeed has pronounced antiseptic properties, which help to naturally regulate sebum production and prevent the appearance of blemishes. You can thus incorporate it at a rate of one drop, directly into your night cream to tighten skin pores and have clearer and smoother skin upon waking. Organic grapefruit essential oil being photosensitizing, daytime application to the skin is indeed not recommended.
Stimulates hair growth and adds shine :
-
If organic white grapefruit essential oil is useful for the skin, it can also be used to care for hair! Its stimulating properties give it a positive action on the scalp, by limiting hair loss and promoting growth.
Its pleasant, soft and deliciously fruity scent makes it a natural active ingredient to incorporate into hair care products such as masks or conditioners. As in facial care, it can also be added to your usual dose of shampoo (1 to 2 drops maximum).
Usage Tips
Both soothing and stimulating, organic white grapefruit essential oil will be ideal for use in atmospheric diffusion, both to promote a more positive state of mind and to encourage relaxation. Its antiseptic properties also make it a natural ally for disinfecting ambient air and for fighting bad odors.
It will also be used mainly for its detoxifying properties, useful both for regaining comfort after a rich meal and in body care to help fight water retention and cellulite formation. Its fruity and gourmet scent makes it a very pleasant essential oil to incorporate into all types of cosmetic recipes, but be careful to avoid sun exposure as it is photosensitizing.
In facial care, it purifies combination to oily skin, and fights blemishes while bringing radiance to dull complexions. Finally, it also helps to limit hair loss and promote their growth when incorporated into strengthening shampoos or hair care products.
Organic white grapefruit essential oil can be used alone, or in combination with other essential oils to reinforce or complement its various virtues. You can thus associate it with Chinese cinnamon, black spruce or black pepper essential oils for its energizing benefits, or with peppermint, exotic basil or tarragon to reinforce its digestive properties.
