Cloves come from the clove tree, which belongs to the Myrtaceae family. Originally from Indonesia, the clove tree has persistent green foliage and can reach a height of 20 meters.

Cloves are actually flower buds, harvested before the flower blooms and then dried in the sun until they harden and take on their characteristic dark brown color.

  • INCI name: Eugenia caryophyllus bud oil
  • Botanical name: Eugenia caryophyllus
  • Part of the plant extracted: Cloves
  • Extraction method: Steam distillation

Cultivation & Origin

Cloves were discovered in the Moluccas archipelago in North Indonesia. Traditionally used in Chinese medicine, cloves were already renowned for their oral health benefits, particularly their purifying and breath-freshening properties. Later, traces of their use were found among the Greeks, Romans, and in Syria.
Today, cloves are an ingredient in many culinary dishes, such as gingerbread, speculoos, and sauerkraut! They are also part of the composition of certain Dutch cheeses.

Its powerful and woody fragrance is also used to purify the air, in combination with orange.
Currently, clove trees are mainly cultivated in Indonesia, but also in Tanzania, on the island of Zanzibar, and in Brazil.

Health Properties

Contributes to oral well-being :

  • It is often said that clove essential oil is the dentist's best friend! And for good reason, its anesthetic action is particularly effective in helping to soothe tension. It can be used as a local application, diluted in a vegetable oil, on canker sores, abscesses or painful areas to regain comfort.
It can also be incorporated into homemade toothpaste recipes or mouthwashes, in combination with other active ingredients and essential oils with complementary properties.

Helps fight against viruses and bacteria :

  • The high eugenol concentration in clove essential oil gives it significant antibacterial properties.
In addition to oral bacteria, it helps fight against many pathogenic germs, particularly digestive ones. Also an antispasmodic, it is recommended as support during episodes of gastroenteritis to help eliminate the virus and to regain digestive well-being during a crisis.

Toning and stimulating :

  • Organic clove essential oil will also be an interesting ally to help promote tone and vitality during periods of physical or mental fatigue, or as support during an infection.
For this use, it is recommended for olfaction and not for diffusion because it contains a lot of phenols, molecules that can be irritating to mucous membranes. The stimulating properties of clove essential oil are also useful from a hormonal point of view, particularly in helping to stimulate the ovaries and balance the thyroid.

Keeps unwanted insects away :

  • The powerful scent of clove essential oil will also help keep unwanted insects away from the house, especially moths, mosquitoes, and pests. Sprayed on surfaces diluted or soaked on cotton pads to be placed in kitchen cupboards, it will sustainably repel parasites and help eliminate bad odors.

Cosmetic Properties

Acts as support in cases of fungal and skin infections :

  • The antifungal and antibacterial properties of clove essential oil are also found in cosmetics. Formidable for helping to overcome skin or vaginal fungal infections, its high concentration of thymol gives it powerful virtues to eliminate the pathogens responsible for infections in support of appropriate treatment. Being quite irritating to the skin, it should be well diluted beforehand in a vegetable oil and combined with other milder essential oils such as tea tree essential oil, for example, before application to the affected areas.

Prevents the signs of skin aging :

  • Rich in antioxidants, organic clove essential oil will also be an ally for mature skin! By fighting against the formation of free radicals responsible for the appearance of signs of aging, it helps promote collagen production and maintain skin elasticity and suppleness. Applied to at-risk areas as a preventative measure, such as hands, for example, it also helps prevent the appearance of brown spots. As indicated previously, it is recommended to dilute it well before topical application to prevent it from irritating the skin.

Reduces muscle tension :

  • The antispasmodic properties of clove essential oil will also delight athletes! Applied to painful areas in circular massages and previously diluted in a vegetable oil, it will help to soothe muscle tension as well as soreness after an intense sports session.
For this use, it can be used alone, or in combination with other essential oils with similar properties, such as peppermint essential oil for example.

Usage Tips

Purifying, soothing, and stimulating, organic clove essential oil has multiple virtues to contribute to overall well-being, both physically and mentally.

Through olfaction, it will help fight against bacteria , particularly intestinal ones, and combat fatigue and lack of vitality. On the skin, it will be used diluted in a vegetable oil to help eliminate fungal infections and other skin infections. It will also be a great ally for restoring comfort in case of dental problems, as an addition to homemade toothpastes or mouthwash recipes.
Finally, its powerful scent will help repel unwanted insects  from the house, purify the ambient air, and perfume your interior.

Organic clove essential oil can be used alone or in combination with other essential oils such as laurel, lemon, Chinese cinnamon, or compact oregano to enhance its antibacterial properties.
